Preview for the Nonoshima Canoeing Trip

Out of the blue, a friend of mine messaged me on Facebook Messanger asking if would like to go visit one of the Urato Islands in Matsushima Bay. He then told me that he was planning on going around the islands either by canoe or kayak.

Nonoshima sits in the middle of the Urato Islands near the Oku-Matsushima peninsula. We canoed for a total of 5km (about 3.5miles) around the islands finding fun things to explore along the way.

Nonshima has many small islands surrounding it and the natural beauty around the island is breathtaking.

Nonoshima was hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. Rebuilding efforts are underway and the people there are resilient. There are many things to see along the way.

If you want to go to Nonoshima, you need to go to Marine Gate in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, and get a ticket for the ferry to the island. If you are coming by train from Sendai or Ishinomaki, your stop is Hon-Shiogama Station. For the ferry it costs ¥1100 for adults. Coincidentally, for each parent/adult ticket purchased, one child can accompany for free. After, you need to purchase more tickets.
